Gift Wrap Tuesday - Heart Shaped Gift Box using Pagoda

Today I was asked to make a gift wrap or home decor item, I think this one can qualify for both, it would make a super gift wrap for a special wedding or anniversary gift, and look fabulous in a bedroom afterwards, just to hold bits and pieces ............

I started with a bare heart shaped box, the type you can buy in any craft store. This one is by Papermania in the UK, but I know that Michaels carries them in the USA. It is quite large, measuring 8" across it's widest point, so would hold a decent sized gift
I gave it three coats of a burgundy red acrylic paint, here it is drying after the first coat - acrylic paint has the advantage that it is very quick drying, and hardwearing too, so your project will stay looking good

I drew around the base of the box onto the reverse, white part of a sheet of DCWV paper (from the All Dressed Up stack), then cut just inside the line to get a perfect shaped lining for the inside of the box

While the last coat was drying, I cut out the screen from Pagoda at 10" in black (page 70 of the manual, shift)
then cut the main image out at the same size in pearlised white cardstock...................

I glued the two cuts together with a zig pen, and positioned them on top of the box, when I had fiddled around with the placement and was happy with the way it looked, I cut around the edges with a craft knife

.......................and ended up with this

Next, I cut out 4 flowers at 2 1/2", 6 at 2 1/4", and 6 at 2", out of a burgundy self-spot paper (Bo-Bunny), and cut the centres out of the pearly white cardstock (page 55 of the manual). I layered the flowers with foam pads to add dimension, and added 'silver' beads to the stamens

I randomly added trips of tiny metal beads to the screen

......................and added a gingham ribbon with a huge bow to the side of the box with double sided tacky tape

and of course I had to make a little tag to go with the box, using scraps of left over card. The tag was the kanji tag (shift) on page 57 of the manual, cut at 3"

So that's my project for today, I hope you've enjoyed it, I think it would look fabulous done in golden shades for a Golden wedding anniversary............or silver.................or in shades to tone with the recipients bedroom. Our bedroom is in shades of duckegg blue and oyster, and I am going to make one in these colours for the bathroom, and cover the finished box with mod podge to protect it before filling it with soaps - so pretty.

It's snowing here as I write this, we don't cope very well here with snow. Our climate is very moderate, we don't have harsh winters, or very hot summers, so we are not geared up to extremes. More than a couple of inches of snow, and the country grinds to a halt, buses and trains stop running, schools close...........you get the picture. So I have an important question to ask those of you who deal with the white stuff on a regular basis

How do you walk on snow without looking very silly?
I asked this on my blog a while back, but got no sensible answers, just a lot of laughter!!

The way I see it, you have four main categories

First, the shuffle shuffle, where the feet are dragged across the snow leaving marks that look like a giant snail trail

Then we have the teeter teeter - where you walk in tiny tiny mincing steps, whilst trying to look confident at the same time

Then there is the tiptoe totter - usually women, who insist on wearing the thigh high stiletto boots they had for Christmas. Am I in this category? Don't be silly............

Lastly we have the 'Snow? What Snow?' brigade, usually men, who walk with giant confident steps before doing that lurch thing - the one where you suddenly leap forwards, arms flailing like a windmill, and hang suspended in midair before crashing to the ground.

So anyone with sensible answers to a sensible question............. :)

I'll be back tomorrow with my card for 'wildcard Wednesday' See you all then

As we say in the UK, cheerio for now

What a beautiful box! I´m sorry I can´t give you good answer on how to walk on snow:) You will recieve laughter from me too:) I live in Sweden, and I guess I´m so used to snow that I have never even thought about your question. Hope you will have a great day!

Love that box!Very pretty. And I happen to have one of them on hand! I will be creating a similar one tomorrow!
As for the snow walking, I never thought about it. Here in Iowa, we are so used to snow, it is just natural to walk how ever you can get aroung. I suppose we all look silly!

Simply beautiful Enfys and seeing it here in such details really makes me admire the attention to detail you have shown. The best way to walk in snow is Don't! Stay in doors and play with your cricut lol.

I love the box!!! It looks amazing :):) And I like the idea that you did with the pagoda screen cut!

When it comes to the snow, for me there is not a lot of choise but to slip'nslide. My snowboots are like 2 sizes to big, so I feel very clownesque with them on, and then I have 4 dogs to walk, who have a nice grip in the snow with their paws. I just use my boots as ski's I suppose! But luckily, overhere in Hull-UK, we did not get all the snow the rest of the UK did!

Beautiful box. Instructions are fabulous. On the snow question, make sure you are well padded:)

I wish I could help with the snow question but, I have no idea how to walk in snow, I live in Florida. The last time it snowed and stuck to the ground was in 1989.
I love this box. The colors and design are beautiful. I really like the 3-D quality of the flowers.

Your heart-shaped box is spectacular! I love the colors and designs of the papers. As for the snow----I also live in an area that rarely gets snow. Residents in our area panic at the threat of snow! My advice when walking outside in snow--slow and steady!

LOVELY box!! Thank you for all of the pics "in progress"!
I was raised in Sun Valley (Ketchum), Idaho and never really thought about how to walk. We just did. Or, perhaps, we just thought we were!! I have lived in North Central Texas since 1981 and we don't get much snow. Wonder how it would be to go back home in the wintertime? LOL

Beth said...

I would have never thought to use the Cricut to decorate a box. Thanks for showing yet another possibility! Ha on the snow walk! I live in southeast Texas, and we would be doing the same thing if we had snow. Shut down and definitely trying to figure out how to walk on/in it!

Wow Enfys, this is beautiful, a gift that would be treasured for a long, long time.

MpoA very nice idea with putting the screen on the box. I love he asian flair. I live in the windy city, Chicago and we usually walk in the streets and dodge cars. We wear boots with a good grip so we don't fall. If you have to walk in snow you should go slow and take marching like steps and look down. The depth of snow is deceiving. Many here have misjudged where the curb was and fell and broke their hip. Walk toward the middle or away from the street so you don't fall too. An inch or two is all the show it takes to end up in the E.R. Shuffling your feet just makes the get colder faster because you are burying your feet in snow. Love your projects and please be careful in the snow since you are not used to how tricky it can be to walk and drive. CHEERIO MATE!

Craftyanny said...

Enfys this is adorable!!! A gorgeous little box. I like how you've cut the screen larger than the box, I would probably have cut it smaller and stuck it in the middle lol
Happy crafting, cya tomorrow

As for snow, I have over 31 inches of it right now with a promise of 10-20 more inches starting today so I am the STAY INSIDE AND DONT GO OUT person! It is just too much for me!

En, a lovely project. I dont persoanlly have the Pagoda cart but I liked your view on how to use one of the larger cuts. Not an aspect I have put on these types of cuts. Perhaps there are some larger cuts on other carts that you could use in a similar way. Rock on En for putting a different twist on a simple two layer cut.

I really like the box.It would look great filled with chocolate...but then again, anything filled with chocolate would look good to me..lol.
I have to laugh about the snow...we're expecting another 18-24 inches tonight, and we just had over 24 inches last Sat. It's not the snow you have to worry about...just walk...it's the ice. That's when the smaller steps come in handy. Good luck. Hope you guys can handle it. Thanks for sharing your project and story.

Love this box!! My teenager saw it and I have a feeling I may be getting the cart as a gift just b/c she liked it. Can't give you a good answer to the walking in snow all I can say is everyone looks the same. You become numb to it after a while. We have 14-20 coming tonight and tomorrow.

As for your walking in the snow question... I live in the Dallas Texas area and we do not get much snow. When we do get it and I must get out I walk very gingerly and slow. The best thing for me to do is stay inside and wait until it thaws. Leave it to the professionals.

LOVE LOVE this box, so elegant and stunning!!! You are truly a gifted artist En!! I love the pagoda cart, this one is definitely on my wish list, as my daughter also loves Asian theme items.

As for the snow question, I fall into the "so clumsy, I will end up on my arse no matter what I do" category, or when I am 12, my HUGE Polish sheepdog (or was he English? We had two sheepdogs, can't remember which one was which, but one was extremely big!), anyways, he will see a car skidding down the street towards me while I am on the sidewalk, run to me and jump on me, causing me to do a flip and hit my left ankle on a metal mailbox, which left quite a nice sprained ankle.

Yes..that would be me. *sigh*

*HUGS* En, loving your week as calendar girl!!!

Love your heart box. When you are so used to snow as we are, you just walk naturally. And I don't know why women would wear high heels in snow. Just plain dumb to my way of thinking.

Oh Enfys, what an absolutely beautiful valentine gift box. I loved the way you used the black screen on the top. The lovely flowers added so much interest -- in fact all the details were just wonderful. Thanks for sharing your detailed directions.I am a very visual learner and the photos really helped. As for the snow--I live in Oregon which has much the same climate as you. I find a good arm or rail to hold onto really helps. See you tomorrow -- I'll be having a good cup of Black Current tea--oh, and that helps with the snow also!!

As to walking in snow living in Florida for the last 20 years I would go with the shuffle shuffle. Less apt to fall and if you get confident enough you can start to glide across the frozen ground.

I grew up in sunny FL, but have lived in several snowy areas since then... I walk normally if it's just snow, but if it's ice I was told to use more of an "ice skating" movement. That way, if you do start to slip & slide you are a little more prepared with that "gliding" motion! Good luck! ;-)

LOL, I love the box and the question. I just fell down my driveway on Saturday night. The snow wasnt' my problem, the ice was. I suggest staying off sidewalks and walking on the snow covered grass. Love the box. As an Arkansas on snow (we rarely get it either), I find that if I draw my knees up high and stomp down hard into the snow, I am less likely to topple. Of course, you asked for a way that wouldn't look stupid, and I'm pretty sure this isn't it!

Sharon said...

Wow! The box itself is a gift without anything in it! I love your idea of using a box for bathroom soaps, too. I feel like a winner after seeing this.

Hi Enfys! Great Valentine Box. It's not too feminine and not too masculine either. A great box for lots of occasions! Just beautiful. I would not have thought of making the lattice part bigger and cutting it, great idea! TFS

As for the snow - I am a Northeasterner and we get all sorts of winter weather around here from ice to sleet to freezing rain to snow. Right now New Jersey has from 10 inches to 30 some inches on the ground depending on where you live and are expecting another 10-18 inches today and tomorrow. My advice is to get a good pair of winter boots with good lug soles (www.landsend.com or www.llbean.com are great for that and pray! But the best idea yet, like many other posters have said, is to stay inside and make some great crafts while drinking a nice hot cup of cocoa!!! Stay safe and warm!

As far as walking on snow goes I guess we really don't have a problem with it. I grew up here and still live in Minnesota. You just put your boots on and walk. Yes you slip occasionally but unless you fall all the way down, it's just normal and not really silly since it's so normal. Now walking on ice is slippery!

What a great box, I never would have thought to use the screen cut in that way, thanks for helping me broaden my thought process.
As far as the snow goes, you need water proof boots and then just walk as you normally would- try to step where the snow crunches under your feet- if it crunches it isn't as slippery thus no falling on your duff:) good luck!

Fab box Enfys, it looks great and lovely for a little gift.
I am hopeless at walking on the snow especially when been dragged along by the dog - maybe I should just wear skis!!!

We get a lot of snow in western PA. I would definitely say that there no matter how you walk in snow, you are going to look silly. I am a shuffler.

Such a cute idea! We had a lot of snow yesterday here in Oklahoma, but thankfully almost all of it has melted off so no problems walking! But I wouldn't have high heels to walk in snow either - I shuffle enough in sturdy shoes when we have snow and ice! The only advice I have is roll if you fall to lessen your chances of being hurt!

As for walking on snow, I walk with a cane, so can't hardly walk on "dry" ground, much less snow! LOL so....I stay inside! My advice to you...stay inside and play in your craft room! :)

Snow.... The older I get the more gently
I walk. Slow and steady mate.
Or carry sand or rock salt with you and
Sprinkle it before you as you go.
Or... (I've not tried it but) maybe golfers
shoes. With the spikes? Not on ice, however.

I love the box! Very cute and I love the white fill in boxes.

As for the snow, I live in Minnesota, USA, and I just walk normally. If it's deep (I would say 6+ inches), I usually high step it, run through it with a VERY long stride, or will just walk normally if the snow isn't super heavy and I have boots on. Hope that helps! I've never thought about it, because I have lived it 4-5 months of the year for my entire life. :)

Living in MN you just get used to walking in snow as we get plenty. Just wear a good pair of boots and start out slow.

So pretty Enfy,
as for the snow, you are supposed to do what ? w a l k ...walk oh..... thats what I am doing wrong, I am usually on my butt in the winter here in Canada, so I can't help you with the way you are supposed to walk in the snow, LOL
I fell 2 days before Christmas and I still can't walk on my ankle, I didn't break it, but I did something, Physio 3 times a week!!!! I think I may need surgery...

aimado said...

I love this, I would not have thought of using that screen because the shape is so different but you pulled it off!
The answer to how to walk on snow... is you dont stay in and craft!

shutterbuggin said...

The box is stunning. Your description of snow walking is hilarious. We have fairly mild winters but when we get it we usually get ice. Talk about fun to walk on. I suggest not walking unless absolutely necessary and when you do the slow and steady will normally make it without incident. Forget about all dignity though. LOL

I love how you used the tree
from Pagoda to create your design.
It's a beautiful keepsake!
As for walking in snow... make sure
you have boots w/ good traction.
It's easier walking in snow than
ice! For walking on ice, you walk
like a duck!! :D
Hopefully the snow won't last long
for you. I live in GA and it never
lasts very long. Thankfully!!!
Thanks En!

Very nice!
We don't think that much about the snow in MN. Its normal for now..so we just walk around...don't drag the feet...makes it harder to get around!

This box is so beautiful! I love the flowers!

As for walking in the snow - I am from North Dakota, so we usually get a layer of ice with snow on top. So I use the shuffle and slide method. I shuffle along until I hit ice then slip and slide and try not to fall. Then you take a look around to see how many people have seen you flailing around! Good luck with the snow and I look forward to you future projects!
