When I first started buying Copics, I was completely lost and had no idea out of the 350 some odd sketch markers which ones would be best to start off with. This meant that I just bought which colors I liked in sets of three. It ended up working out ok, but I can see where it could have totally gone wrong.
Today I am going to give you my top go to colors combos in every color family. You can use this as a guide when you buy your own.
Now remember to buy your Copics in sets of threes. You need a light, medium, and dark hue of every color you buy. This will help tremendously when shading and using your markers properly.

Ok, now I know there are not any pictures here. So, it is very word heavy. However, this will be easy to print off if you need to.
Hope you find this helpful when you head out to make your next Copic purchase!

Thanks for doing this Melanie, I have been deciding whether to buy more Promarkers as they run out or to replace them with Copics as it seems these are what most people use. So this will be really useful for me.

Great choices, Mel! Wonderful list for those just starting out.
Thanks, Melanie! This is helpful! I have looked at the overwhelming selection at my LSS and online and planned on starting with a few basic colors. I always like to see what color combos others suggest/prefer. It gives me tons of great ideas! Thanks again!!!
Thanks so much for these suggestions, as the markers can add up (in price)! I would love to see some of your work using these!

Melanie, Thank you for this list and more about copic. I honestly have not experimented with these at all. We are quite limited in the area I live in with craft supplies let alone scrapbook. But I printed this list off and the next time I go to town intend to get the copic sets you mention. Otherwise I would probably be lost.
thx for the guideline :)
Thanks for the guide. Not sure I want to venture into copics yet. Need to do lots of research
Thanks for listing the guide for all of us! Takes the brain work out of it for some of us! :)
I haven't purchased any of these markers yet, for two reasons, I haven't done a lot of stamping yet but am starting to do more and I am uncertain of my ability as an artist to color in the stamps and make them look good in the process. I wish there was someone close by where I live that is a Copic instructor... I checked the website and there is only 1 listed in Michigan!!!
I've been wanting to try these but the list of markers is a bit overwhelming. Thanks for giving me a place to start!
I have a few of the copics, and love them all. This has been a slow growing collection for me. I do love the way they make everything look. Very realistic shading.
Just a newbie.... Love your site.
thank you! With 300+ color choices, it's hard to know where to start!! this is PERFECT!
I am excited to do more with my stamps and plan to use copic markers for this. I have a few, not nearly enough!! Have my list now and will be buying more. Thanks for the list.
